Airport Awareness Day October 7, 2006 By Joel Godson
......When the weather was checked around 7:10 am on Saturday, October 7, for this year’s Dean Memorial Airport Awareness Day, the ‘briefer’ indicated, “After the fog burns off by 10am, you will have great weather, visibility over ten miles, light winds, and an unlimited ceiling ”. The fog didn’t ‘burn off’ until about 11am, which delayed the arrival of all the pilots flying into the event, mobile fight controllers, and the YE flights. However, it was a great day after we got started flying YE’s. The event was made possible by the 46 volunteers, including members and pilots from EAA Chapters 613 and 740, Airport Commission members, Haverhill Community members, two Dartmouth Hitchcock DART Air Response helicopter teams, Marko the Magician with his nicely decorated Cessna 182, and the ‘Chat’ table that featured models of all, but one, of the aircraft flown by the anonymous scholarship donor. Six businesses in the area, again sponsored event Information in advance, and the wonderful ‘live’ broadcast from the Airport by ‘Stephen John” from WYKR. Forty(40) youngsters became YOUNG EAGLES. Six EAA pilots flew 16 flights including: 2 pilots from EAA Chapter 613 who reside in the Burlington Vermont area, 3 pilots from EAA Chapter 740 that reside in the Lebanon area, and one pilot from the Montpelier area who flew 6 flights with 15 youngsters. The ‘ground team’ supporting the YE pilots, efficiently did the YE registration, assigned them to pilots, and filled out the Certificates that the pilots signed and presented to each YE after their orientation flight. All YE’s also received YE bracelet. Six colored photographs were purchased of the YE’s with their pilot. Eleven adults plus two youngsters, received scenic rides in 6 flights, all flown by Jerry Lyons, Co-Chair for the event. After expenses are paid, the funds received will be used toward Capitol Improvements at the Airport. It was great to have in attendance the anonymous benefactor who has given over 25 thousand dollars to the Dean Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund. Presently, the Fund is approaching FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS...that will permit a $1,000 each year to a deserving person graduating high school who will study in an Aviation related field...and there are more than 300! The static aircraft display included: two DHART Helicopters, an Ultra-Light, a Grumman Tiger, a Cessna 152, a 1946 Aircoupe, and a few Cessna 182’s. The Haverhill Police Safety table was a hit again, providing excellent educational information and safety items to community members for their use. Also two EMT’s, with the Woodsville Ambulance, were in attendance. People stopped by the tables where information on the Airport Master Plan update, and Civil Air Patrol(CAP) was available. Over hundred vehicles were parked by three people. About 600 people from Haverhill and surrounding towns from New Hampshire and Vermont, attended the event. The Food Table, not only had various soft drinks, hot chocolate and coffee, hot dogs and hamburgers; but a wonderful homemade tomato soup was also available. THE EVENT WAS BIG SUCCESS BECAUSE: WEATHER WAS PERFECT; 46 VOLUNTEERS MADE the EVENT HAPPEN; and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the MANY FAMILIES from the local area ATTENDED the EVENT!! Thank you all.
